First Interaction with Dr. Mandi

The day I attended the session of Dr. Prasad, it changed my thinking towards life. The education is not only learning and getting knowledge, but to implement it in our social world. We spend so much money over our education without thinking about its repayment. If we are spending then it’s our duty to earn that in the given time. This should be the real meaning of doing business education.

As the lecture proceeds

The session started with the great song "Another brick in the wall" by Pink Floyd. It was really an amazing experience for me. The first concept that I learnt was the slogan, " Socho Becho, Becho Sikho, Sikho Socho". He told us that in order to learn the basics of management one needs to go out of the class room. In my opinion, he is really determined to install the feeling of entrepreneurship in each of us. He told us to earn our own bread right from the first day in the college. He emphasised on " Aaj ki roti, Aaj hi kamana".
He stressed on practical approach in teaching methodology.

  •  PINK FLOYD videoanother brick in the wallthis video is a satire on our education system. Students are forced to mug up subjects before exams without any understanding and interest of such subjects.
  • Mandi video this video clip is showing how young graduates of NITIE are applying their theoretical knowledge in the real world. It teaches us to become self- employed, so that we should not depend on others for our bread. I think this should be the theme of business education.
  • Mathematical puzzlethis was a simple puzzle to arrange nine digits in a 3X3 matrix such that the sum of digits in each row or column or diagonal is equal. In this type of problem, how we approach towards the solution is very important. It makes the problem simple or difficult. Also in the real time scenario, how we start our analysis on problems plays a crucial role in solving.
  • Different engineering instruments to demonstrate basic laws of physics
  • Toys made of pipes to explain algebraic equations
  •  S.M.A.R.T
  •  Construct a pillar with small cubicle blocks with some rules

Socho Becho, Becho Seekho, Seekho Becho:

The slogan given by Dr. Prasad “Socho Becho, Becho Seekho, Seekho Becho” is something that I cannot forget in my whole life. This contains the whole marketing concept of the industry in it. This means before selling anything we have to think and realize what its importance and exact usefulness is. The uniqueness of Dr. Mandi is that he not only tells the concept but also shows by the examples and perfect demonstration. He showed the structure made up of the colourful pipes which look like the normal showpiece. I thought it to be some kind of toy and then I realize we cannot sell it just by calling it a toy. If I have to sell this I have to prove its actual use and worthiness. On the same lines I realized if I have to become a successful manager, firstly I have to think and have to figure out my uniqueness, qualities and short comings and then I have to work on those to improve further.

SMART goals reflect effective management.

S Specific
  •  Is the objective precise and well defined?
  •  Is it clearly understood to everyone?
M Measurable
  • How to decide whether job is done or not?
  • What evidence is needed to confirm it?
A  Achievable
  • Is it within our capabilities?
  • Are there sufficient resources available with us to perform the job?
R Realistic Results-oriented
  •  Is it possible for the individual to perform the objective?
  •  How realistic the approach is in the current business context?
  •  Does it fit into the overall pattern of individual’s work?
T Timely Time framed, Time-bound
  • What is the deadline for the job to complete?
  •  Is it feasible to meet this deadline?
  •  Are there any review dates for this job?
  •   Is it appropriate to do all part of the job now?
ü

ü EXCELLENCE = EFFICIENCY * EFFECTIVENESS

When these two ‘EFFICIENCY’ and ‘EFFECTIVENESS‘ meet,  ‘EXCELLENCE’ is achieved. Organizations are instruments for excellence. An individual can easily achieve excellence while working in an organization by doing their job effectively and efficiently. If an organization is not managed properly, it can give worst result. So with proper management an organization can reach to the top of success.

Efficiency and Effectiveness are two distinct things. It must be noted that they don’t happen in organizational life separately. They should happen simultaneously. There is need to understand them .There is no need to imagine that they happen separately.
In fact they both happen one over the other. Let me explain this with an example.

For example:

Where to go to, how to go, why to go to is effectiveness.. Once it is decided, then going started. It is called proper planning. How less one needs to spend? How fast one can go? It makes the job efficient. One needs to think effectively. To become effective one need to act efficiently. Where efficiency ends and effectiveness starts, is  a matter of understanding. In reality, there is no end of one and beginning of the other. Both efficiency and effectiveness will be in force simultaneously to achieve excellence.  But one needs to be aware of what both are. How they are different and affects the overall performance.
The game of  'Tower  Building'  taught us how to plan your job. A manager needs to be a good planner. He should plan well, so that his workers follow a proper direction. In the game with proper planning a task which was looking tough was achieved easily.
Try to relate and interpret these concepts through  'Tower  Building' game that we played in the class.
Some real numbers from the - Tower Building - Game

I. Data of Tower building conducted for Sec B IM 19

Tower height set by the team was = 17 cubes (after discussion with other members)

Historical performance of Tower height was =  17 cubes

Team goal set for tower height was = 17 cubes

Team Tower Performance was  = 18 cubes

Students’ ability to set Tower Height was:

< 15 cubes =       45 Percent

15 to 20 Cubes = 45 Percent

> 20 Cubes was = 5 Percent

Rules of the game:
In the start, students are asked to build a tower with open eyes. Only one student will build a tower. He used his ODD hand in building the tower. He / she is not blind folded means his/her eyes are open.
Students tower height ranged =  10 to 35 cubes
Then Faculty introduced twisted the rules for Tower building .
Tower will be built by the student with closed eyes. Other members will instruct and guide to the blind folded member in the building tower.

Real Tower was constructed by one team :
One student who set a target of 17 Cubes  was invited to build the tower. He built the tower of 18 cubes. The whole class was really amazed and happy for the performance of the student. The goal set by the team was looking tough and not really achievable but was done in the end with proper use of resources, good planning and communication among team members.

Learning from this GAME:

How to execute the goals that are set?
Task Focus and People focus

Whether the Nature of Management changes as the performance levels of organizations reach certain levels?

Low level performance - Higher and highest level performance

How to achieve the target with given constraints?

Impossible looking task was easily achieved with proper management.

Learning from the lecture:

  • Slogans to encourage entrepreneurship and become self employed.
  • Make things simple and easy to understandable.
  • Innovation and employability in education system.
  • Managerial skills
There is no impossible goals as such and everything thing can be achieved through effective goal setting, communication and support which is Management in real sense.
One should have a Risk appetite in support for the goal setting.
